Camp Green visited the Knox County 4-H Fair this week. They toured with the Knox County Fair Queen’s court and Purdue Agriculture Center intern, Blake Buckthal. The campers checked out the 4-H projects, which raised their interested in joining. (more…)
This week, Camp Green visited Prahdan Farms, a turkey farm near Wheatland, Indiana. Jaleigh Harlow, one of our Day Camp counselors, and her family own Prahdan Farms and invite our day campers to visit their agricultural operation.
Apple Hill Orchard, located just north of Vincennes, invited Camp Green to learn about the variety of fruits they grow. Karen from Apple Hill Orchard led the day campers on a tour and gave each camper a bag to collect fruit.
Camp Green visited Ouabache (Wabash) Trails to explore nature and learn about wetlands with park staff and volunteers. Campers in grades K-3 searched the woods and the creeks on Trail 7 on a wetland scavenger hunt. Tasked with finding items including an animal track, poison ivy, an insect-eaten leaf, and evidence of people, the campers explored the trail, identifying insects and plants along the way. (more…)
Our day campers learned about horses and farriers when Ron Ice visited last week. He talked about horse safety and how to approach a horse. Campers listened to Ron explain how to respect horses while enjoying the company they have to offer. Campers learned the importance of practicing safety around a horse and Ron taught them the fundamentals of how to respect a horse so it will respect a rider.

Campers learned about nature, frogs, and toads last week. Maggie Lawrence, assistant naturalist at John James Audubon State Park in Henderson, Ky., visited to share her knowledge about the natural environment with our day campers.
Please welcome Alex Mahrenholz, the Y’s Camp Green intern this summer through the support of the Knox County Soil and Water Conservation District. Currently in her senior year at Murray State University double-majoring in Agriculture Education and Agriculture Communications, Alex grew up on her family’s grain farm in Lawrenceville, Illinois. She started raising livestock of her own such as show cattle, horses, and rabbits in her teens. Alex continued to remain heavily involved in both 4-H and FFA, organizations that strive to educate youth about agriculture and environmental stewardship. She worked with kids through an internship with Illinois Ag In the Classroom and with Illinois Farm Bureau as a farm pen pal to urban youth wishing to learn more about agriculture and natural resources.
