Our two raised garden beds at YMCA Summer Day Camp are taking off for the summer! These two beds are just a small part of Camp Green, a program in partnership with the Knox County Soil and Water Conservation District to educate and inform YMCA youth about natural resources and environmental stewardship in the local community.
The beds are full of fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs for our day campers to enjoy later on this summer. We’ve incorporated strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, and pea plants into our first raised bed, along with three varieties of sunflowers, an oregano bush, and sweet basil plant. In our second raised bed we have fresh head lettuce and red lettuce for a delicious salad. Along with two varieties of broccoli plants that our day campers absolutely love to eat! We just added sweet potatoes and zucchini plants.
Campers are learning how to grow food they can eat right out of the garden and are enjoying every minute of it.
